Winner of Miss USA 2019

Cheslie Kryst was crowned Miss North Carolina USA on 20 October 2018 represented North Carolina at the Miss USA 2019 pageant in Reno, Nevada, where she became North Carolina’s third Miss USA. A graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law and Graduate School of Business, where she earned both a Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Business Administration degree, Cheslie was an attorney specializing in complex civil litigation before she became Miss USA. The pageant community lost a bright light when Cheslie passed in 2022, leaving a legacy we will never forget.

2019 bio:

An attorney specializing in complex civil litigation, Cheslie Kryst loves to learn and develop her diverse range of interests. In addition to practicing full-time as an attorney, Cheslie runs a blog–White Collar Glam—that provides workwear fashion inspiration and resources for women.

Cheslie is a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law and Graduate School of Business, where she earned both a Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Business Administration degree. While at Wake Forest, she competed on the AAJ Trial Team that won the 2017 AAJ National Championship—the first time Wake Forest won the competition.

Before attending Wake Forest, Cheslie graduated from the Honors College at the University of South Carolina, cum laude, and with honors. She was a Division I athlete, having competed on the track and field team for the Gamecocks. She landed top ten in the record books in the triple jump at South Carolina.

For her senior thesis in undergrad, Cheslie conducted research on body image and clothing design. She used her research and a $1,500 grant from the Honors College to design and construct a line of evening gowns for women with varying body types. In 2016, Cheslie won the “Rock the Runway” design competition, a fundraiser sponsored by Goodwill. She designed and constructed a line of eveningwear out of clothes purchased from Goodwill. Cheslie also made a ball gown out of newspaper for the competition.

In her free time, Cheslie enjoys playing piano, hiking, running 5Ks with her mom and walking in fashion shows. She was recently accepted into Leadership Charlotte, Class 40, and is an active Dress for Success Charlotte volunteer. Cheslie has five siblings and credits her success to her loving and supportive family and her ability to learn from failure. She won the title of Miss North Carolina on her third attempt.

Cheslie competed at Miss Universe 2019 at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta on 8 December 2019 and made the top 10.  Her national costume drew inspiration from Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”,  the Statue of Liberty and Rosie the Riveter.

“I wanted to think of a way to combine several iconic American women into one costume,” said the former Miss North Carolina, who helped design her dress with a team at Izquierdo Studio, which has also worked with Madonna, Heidi Klum and Lady Gaga.

The knotted headband and denim gown painted gold are inspired by Rosie the Riveter. “She represents power and empowerment and how women contribute to society,” said Kryst.  The crown and torch — which shoots confetti) are nods to Lady Liberty. “She speaks to freedom,” Miss USA added.  The towering wings reference Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and symbolizes “creativity and authenticity,” Kryst says.  Lastly, the beauty queen will carry the scales of Lady Justice, the moral compass of the judicial system.
