A native of Cornelius, Emily Wakeman was crowned Miss North Carolina Teen USA on 10 October 2015 and represented North Carolina at the Miss Teen USA 2016 pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada. During her reign Emily was a freshman at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. After graduating Emily worked as a reporter in South Carolina, before moving to Washington DC to study at Georgetown Law.

2016 bio:

Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2016 Emily Wakeman is an aspiring journalist and a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a student in the School of Media and Journalism and plans to double major in Political Science.

Emily believes in giving back to the community and as a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority she is involved with their philanthropy, The Ronald McDonald House. She previously served on the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte Teen Board for multiple years. Emily also volunteers with many other charitable organizations including the Foundation for the Carolinas Teen Impact Fund and The Teen Health Connection. While in high school, she co-founded Kicks for Kids in Charlotte, a charity whose mission is to promote health and fitness. Kicks conducted 5k events and raised money to provide athletic equipment and shoes to local under-privileged schools.

While attending Southlake Christian Academy, Emily was the captain of her cheer team and a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Blub. She is active in her church and recently went on a school mission trip to Peru. Emily recently served as a Bank of America Student Leader during which she earned an eight week paid internship for working in a non-profits.

Emily hopes to be a role model to other teenage girls always striving to show that confidence and perseverance is the key to achieving your dreams. She is a strong believer in waking up every day committed to being the best version of herself. She wants to spread the message that there are no limits on the things you are capable of with love, support and passion.

Emily is the daughter of Jeff and Sheila Wakeman. She is the middle daughter and has two sisters Courtney and Julia. Her interests include fitness, fashion, creative writing and volunteering.

After the crown

Winning a state title is a sisterhood for life.  Here are Emily’s “after the crown” photos. After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill, Emily moved to South Carolina where she worked as a news reporter for a number of years.  During this time she made the top five at both Miss South Carolina USA and Miss South Carolina.  She then moved to Washington DC to pursue a law degree at Georgetown Law School, which she completed in 2024.
