2nd runner-up 2022
A native of Newburg, Madelyn Posey was crowned Miss Maryland Teen USA on 2 April 2023 and represented Maryland at Miss Teen USA 2023 in Reno, Nevada. Madelyn loves the outdoors, having grown up on the Potomac River. She enjoys fishing and crabbing and has had her boating license since the age of 13. Madelyn also works as a lifeguard and swim instructor in the summer and loves swimming.
April 2, 2023 Madelyn Posey was called into the Top 5 at Miss Maryland Teen USA for the second year in a row. Much like the first time, she and her many family members and friends in attendance were overcome with feelings of excitement and anticipation. While her goal was the crown, she had already had the experience of a lifetime and knew if this wasn’t her year, she would be right back on this stage next year. However, the judges saw every quality of a representative in Madelyn and she was crowned Miss Maryland Teen USA 2023. Madelyn was among over 60 other teens across the state of Maryland with their eyes and the hearts set on the crown.
Madelyn was born and raised in Newburg, a small town with less than 3,500 residents. She lives on the Potomac River with her parents and brother. Family is first for Madelyn and she enjoys spending as much time with her family as possible. She enjoys fishing and crabbing and has had her boating license since the age of 13. She also works as a lifeguard and swim instructor in the summer and loves swimming.
When she isn’t on or in the water, Madelyn enjoys Cheer and Lacrosse. She also is a band member of Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte are a Mohawk Territory First Nation within Hastings County, Ontario. Madelyn’s maternal great-grandmother was born on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory so Madelyn is heavily involved with the culture and tradition.
Madelyn is also a member of the Unified Track for Special Olympics and has been a member of 4H since she was nine years old, where she has been a Camp Leader at numerous overnight summer camps. Madelyn also plays a very important role in her father’s drag racing team that competes at the Maryland International Raceway. Some of her greatest loves are combined; family, thrill-seeking, and her great state of Maryland.
There is much more to Madelyn than meets the eye. While she is a confident young women today, unfortunately that wasn’t always the case. Growing up, Madelyn struggled much more than her peers. Because of her struggles, she lacked self-esteem and often felt like she just wasn’t intelligent enough to succeed academically. She especially had difficultly when she had to read aloud to the class. She was constantly belittled because she couldn’t read as easily as the others. It wasn’t until her freshman year of high school that Madelyn was diagnosed with a learning difference called dyslexia. Once she was given the diagnosis and the adequate tools to navigate life with her difference, so many things changed. She now has access to the necessary resources, including an individualized education program (IEP), where she is given additional time needed for comprehension and is allowed verbal questions / answers on tests. Her way of learning is not better, not worse, but just different.
Since Madelyn has experienced feelings of exclusion due to her difference, she plans to use her voice during her reign to promote acceptance, tolerance, and inclusivity. Madelyn will forever be thankful to Maryland for allowing her to represent all of the teens across the state.
