A native of Old Town, Julia van Steenberghe was crowned Miss Maine USA on 10 November 2019 and represented Maine at the Miss USA 2020 pageant in Memphis, Tennessee. She has a Masters in Science in Human Development from the Universe of Maine, where she works as a recruiter and engagement specialist.
Miss Maine USA 2020 Julia van Steenberghe is currently in her final semester as an undergraduate student at the University of Maine where she is pursuing a double major in Elementary Education and Child Development and Family Relations. Julia has been named a Presidential Scholar 6 times. She is planning on attending graduate school to obtain her Master’s degree in School Counseling.
Julia has a passion and interest in helping children in all capacities, however, her biggest goal is to end childhood hunger and poverty. She dedicated her senior capstone research project to surveying Maine’s guidance counselors to learn what resources schools have in place to help alleviate these issues. She has spoken at numerous events regarding hunger and poverty across the state. Julia’s passion for children and literacy have also come together and she has helped organize literacy nights for local schools to help families and children learn strategies for improving reading skills.
Julia was a University of Maine Cheerleader for 3 seasons and now co-coaches a middle school team and is active in both her campus and local communities.
Julia is a group fitness instructor teaching classes such as cycling, Pilates and HIIT cardio as well as working for the University’s Office of Admissions. She is a student ambassador who travels throughout New England speaking to prospective students and their families and gives tours to prospective student athletes.
Outside of balancing school, work, and all the responsibilities of being Miss Maine USA, Julia loves to travel and spent this past summer working in Italy educating children on the American culture and teaching English.
