Miss Massachusetts USA & Teen USA 2019 prelims will be held on Saturday at 6pm with finals on Sunday at 5pm. Contestants (both divisions on one page) are posted here. No webcast for this one unfortunately.
Contestant numbers are pretty solid compared to many other states this year - 49 in Miss and 48 in Teen There's been a drop of 20 in Miss - although it's not their lowest since I started keeping notes in 2007, that was in 2010 with 43 - and Teen is the highest it's been since 2015.
Outgong Miss MA USA Alissa Latham gave Mass. their first placement at Miss USA since Sarah Kidd in 2013 - and only their second in 10 years. Massachusetts seems to be on a 5-year cycle of placements - Shawnae Jebbie in 1998, Susie Castillo in 2003 (Shawnae's "little sister"!), Jackie Bruno in 2008 (Susie's "little sister"... spot a trend?!), Sarah Kidd in 2013 and Alissa in 2018! It will be interesting to see if the incoming titleholders are able to break the streak and replicate Alissa's success.
Returning in the Miss pageant are 2018 first runner-up Ashley Baptista, also 2RU in 2016, and second and third runners-up Chelsea Demby and Kelly O'Grady who were competing for the first time last year.
Past New Hampshire contestants Nina Murray and Gina Butler will be hoping some of Allissa's luck from last year rubs off on them - she was first runner-up in NH in 2016 before moving to Massachusetts and winning last year. Nina was a semi-finalist in NH last year and second runner-up in 2017, she was also a non-finalist in Miss Mass Teen USA in 2013 & 2014. Gina was a semi-finalist in Mass last year but was also third runner-up at Miss NH USA 2017, fourth runner-up at Miss NH USA 2016 and a non-finalist at Miss MA USA 2015. In other New England ties, two-time Mass semi-finalist Nicole Eacuello was third runner-up at Miss RI USA 2015. A little farther afield, 2016 New Jersey Teen USA second runner-up Isabelle Varga, who was a semi-finalist from 2013-2015 and won the Photogenic award twice, is competing in her first Miss pageant. Isabelle moved to Massachusetts to attend Boston University.
Other Massachusetts semi-finalists who are competing again this year are Fatima Armaghan, Meghan McInnis and Rachel Miller (2018) and Bridget Durkin (2017).
It's been six years since a complete newbie won Miss MA USA - that was Natalie Pietrzak, Miss Massachusetts USA 2012 - and before Natalie, Miss MA USA 2007 Despina Delios. Natalie is the sister of Miss CT USA 2019 and former Mass runner-up herself Monica Pietrzak.
Side note... how awesome are this year's headshots from Creative Sparks Imagery?!
Teen has very few returning contestants - in fact there are no runners-up returning at all! Miss Massachusetts' Outstanding Teen 2017 Carly Fisher is competing for Miss MA Teen USA for the first time. 2018 semi-finalists who are competing again are Kiersten Khoury and Olivia Lindberg, 2018 Washington semi-finalist Marianne Bautista and California semi-finalist Annie Lu are both competing in Massachusetts this year.
