This year there are a smaller number of contestants in the Miss division - just 53 - and just over half of those have competed previously. Returning from last year's top five are second runner-up Gina Melchiorri, a six-time previous runner-up in both Illinois & Iowa who is having her last shot at a title (go Gina!), third runner-up Michela Moe and fourth runner-up Missy Galvin. 2017 fourth runner-up Angel Reyes, who was a semi-finalist last year, is back, and 2015 & 2016 Mississippi third runner-up Chandler Short is returning to compete in Illinois where she was 2RU to Alex at Miss IL Teen USA 2012. This weekend kicks off the main Miss USA & Teen USA 2019 state pageant season... who else is excited! I've previously posted a rundown of the Texas contestants... and now the Illinois contestants have just been posted too! Check out the contestant photos here. Anyone else get excited by Alaska over the weekend and are now impatient for the rest of the state pageants to start in September? Me! 🙋🏼 In the meantime at least we have the Texas contestants to discuss. The 2019 Texas pageant is being held only nine months after Logan Lester was crowned in January (as the pageant had been postponed due to Hurricane Harvey). Only 10 months after she passed on the Miss Texas Teen USA title, Kirby Lindley is vying to become the first Miss Teen USA 2017 contestant to win a ticket to Miss USA. This year there are only 82 contestants, a considerable drop compared to recent years and by Texas standards this is a much less experienced group as well. There are with only two returning Miss runners-up competing, 2018 first runner-up Isabella Radovan and fourth runner-up Katie Scott. Both made the top five for the first time in the 2018 pageant. In addition to Isabella & Katie, 2014 Teen 2nd runner-up Aliyah Benavides is competing in Miss for the third time (she was a non-finalist in 2015 & 2016). Two previous Teen runners-up from other states are also back: three-time Miss Nevada Teen USA runner-up Paris Regan, who was a semi-finalist at Miss TX USA 2018, and Haley Spathias, who was second runner-up at Miss AR Teen USA 2012 and actually started her pageant career at Miss TX Teen USA with a non-finalist placement in 2009 & semi-finalist placement in 2011. Haley was also a semi-finalist at Miss SC USA 2018. As well as Paris, Ba'Leigh Burns, Erica Morgan and Rachel Hornbuckle are the three other 2018 semi-finalists who are returning for this pageant. JoEllen is no stranger to the Miss AK USA stage, as she was a finalist three years in a row from 2014-2016. Her highest placement was Miss AK USA 2015, when she placed first runner-up. After taking a break for a couple of years, she returned and won the title! Meghan was competing at Miss AK Teen USA for the first time, however both she & JoEllen have experience in the Miss Alaska & Miss Alaska's Outstanding Teen system. First runner-up in the Miss division was Miss AK Teen USA 2004 Whitney Williams who was competing in her first (USA) Miss pageant. Second runner-up, for the second year in a row, was Brandy Kellner. Brandy was a finalist with JoEllen in 2014-2016 and also in 2017 and 2018. Third and fourth runners-up were newcomers Sierra Kinworthy and Hannah Carlile respectively. In Teen, first-time contestant Audrey Johnston finished first runner-up and second runner-up (also for the second year in a row) was former Miss AK's Outstanding Teen Danielle Stam. |
